Belated 2-month report

A little over a week ago we took Anna in for her 2-month check-up.  We’re pleased to report that she is “thriving” - she was 11 lbs 14 oz and 23 inches long at that time.  Those stats earn her a place in the 95th percentile for weight and height for her age!  We figure her cheeks alone account for a pound or two, but she’s still a big girl!

As anyone with children knows, the 2-month check-up introduces the fun world of immunizations.  Anna had her 2-month vaccinations, which translated into 4 different shots.  Needless to say, this was not fun - neither for Anna nor for me.  See, I have a pretty bad case of needle phobia…and well, it was not pleasant to see your little baby stabbed four different times!  Each time the nurse administered the shot, Anna let out an ear-piercing wail and looked at me as if to say, “Why are you letting them do this to me.”  I will admit it…I cried with her (perhaps not quite as wildly, but tears were certainly running down my cheeks).  I guess the saving grace is her incredibly short memory.  I’m sure one hour after we left the doctor’s office she didn’t remember a thing - I wish I could say the same.

The doctor and nurse warned us that Anna may have a reaction to the shots…and she did.  Later on that evening she developed a fever and started screaming uncontrollably.  It was actually kind of scary because NOTHING we could do would calm her down.  She ended up screaming/crying for 3 hours straight and her temperature climbed to 101.8 degrees.  And all this on the night before we were planning on leaving for Kansas to meet her grandparents and other relatives.  At one point I was wiping her down with a wet washcloth and rocking her in my arms in front of the running dryer.  This worked for about 15 minutes until I made a move to put her down - babies are incredibly hot (especially when they have a fever) and I was sweating like a pig!  Stupid mistake.

Lessons learned from this trip to the doctor: make Neal attend the doctor’s appointments when she is scheduled to receive shots, never make such an appointment on the day before you are supposed to travel in the car for 12 hours, and try a little tylenol before going to the doctor’s office.
